My work is interesting sometimes. These maids were dancing next to the Rosson House Museum at Historic Heritage Square yesterday. Earlier in the day, their costumes included pink rabbit ears.
I have a weakness for folk art, crafts. This shot was taken in Dubrovnik, Croatia, in July 2011. The dancer is wearing traditional Croatian garb. (Sorry, I don’t know what part of Croatia.) Anyway, I really like textiles, weaving, pottery, and the like. Honestly, pretty much anything handmade.
Perhaps the attraction to craft comes from childhood. Let’s take the Freudian approach and begin with my mother. She sewed, knitted, and crocheted. I loved watching her hands create clothes, blankets, coats, sweaters, and hats. She alone clothed an entire family of six each year.
When I attended this folk dance festival last summer in Dubrovnik, I was at the edge of my seat. Not so much for the dance..but for the costumes. Oh, heaven is a handmade piece of clothing!
